Straatwerk OPHELP Projekte (http://straatwerk.org.za/vision/) help desperate and destitute individuals to earn cash in hand by means of honest work (as an alternative to begging, theft and other criminal activities).
Mr Ethelbert (99 years) is staying in the residential facility of Straatwerk, Beth Shalom, in Woodstock and is one of the people who got new energy and a new meaning for his life with the help of Straatwerk and its partners.
One of Straatwerk’s partners is GSCID (Grote Schuur Community Improvement District: http://www.gscid.co.za/). Ingrid Frieslaar and Monique Daniels, GSCID’s outreach manager and office administrator respectively, took Mr Ethelbert to Canal Walk Shopping Centre on 14 December 2017 and assisted him in choosing his new wardrobe (clothing, shoes and accessories) at Markham’s.
Six months before, in July 2017, Mr Leonard Ethelbert could not go to church anymore because he was too weak, but on his 99th birthday (Monday 25 December 2017) Mr Ethelbert got up, got dressed in his new suit and was collected by his church friends to attend the Christmas Service and be congratulated on his distinguished birthday!
A little more than a week after that, he could do a shift at Ophelp Projekte in Mowbray again, after a year’s absence due to poor health.
After these miracles, Ingrid Frieslaar entered Mr Ethelbert into the TFG Festive Drive Competition under the “Special Occasion” category. Mr Ethelbert’s life story was sent to the TFG representative and he won first prize for his 99th birthday – a R25 000.00 TFG gift voucher!
